Det kan godt være, at AXE i deres tv-reklamer forsøger at fortælle mig, at de har en duft, der er fantastisk – jeg forbinder den dog med teenagere og duften af tysk "Wunderbaum". Du kender det utvivlsomt selv fra andre produktsammenhænge. Således er det en illusion, at man som marketingafdeling eller lignende kan tage patent på at definere sit brand ift. til kundernes perception af selv samme. Dit brand er ganske enkelt ikke andet end, hvad dine kunder definerer det til at være! Sociale medier spiller i dette henseende ikke en helt uvæsentlig rolle. Disse medier gør det nemlig muligt for kunderne at kommunikere om dit brand uden din forudgående accept og involvering. Hver dag bliver brands således redefineret til kundens fordel – ikke nødvendigvis noget, der passer ind i den stramt strukturerede plan for markedsføringskampagnen. Vil du alligevel søge at få noget indflydelse på dit brand, så bør du i første omgang forsøge at ændre din måde at tænke på. Du bør således bide mærke i det følgende og tage dette med i bagagen når du vil udforme dine fremtidige marketingtiltag: Værdien af et brand tilhører markedet – ikke virksomheden! Hvad mange i marketing endnu ikke har forstået er, at brandet i høj grad lever sit liv uden for selve virksomheden, ikke (kun) i selve virksomheden. Traditionel marketing har en opfattelse af, at de styrer brandet ud fra en hermetisk lukket struktur i virksomheden, som kun de har kontrol over. Brandet er imidlertid indbegrebet af en "åben struktur" – og hvordan er det lige, at man styrer en sådan. Det kan man som udgangspunkt ikke. Du kan imidlertid starte med at "lytte". Hvad er det dine kunder synes, at dit brand definerer? Lyt. Gå i dialog. Og ager så på det du lærer om kunden og dennes definition af dit brand!
